The Role of COD and BOD5 Measurements in Food Industry Wastewater
We commonly use chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) measurements to analyze the strength of the waste stream. This determines the amount of oxygen necessary in stabilizing wastes. This is often helpful in the food industry in particular, due to the fact that they can be used as indicators of waste and lost product. COD and BOD5 levels that are high indicate such waste exists, and when found at certain locations can even be helpful in determining the source of the waste as well as determine the equipment and chemical program design.
